Euro 2020 Cup: Italian Spinazzola could miss out on the competition

Italy’s excitement in reaching the Euro 2020 semifinals on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Belgium suffered from a serious back injury to the back of Leonardo Spinazzola, who was carried to the bed in the second division and is expected to be out of the tournament.

Italian media reports say AS Roma Spinazzola freedom fighter, who greatly helped the Azzurri run in the last four, was at risk of sustaining an Achilles tendon injury, which could affect him for months.

“He did not qualify for this, he has been one of the players in the tournament and he will still be even though he will not be able to play in the next game,” Italian manager Roberto Mancini told a news conference. “We are very sorry, and what has happened seems to be a difficult one.”

Spinazzola, 28, was pictured in tears as he left the field to replace Emerson Palmieri, who is set to take second place against Spain at Wembley.

Italian striker Lorenzo Insigne said the players were frustrated by a friend’s injury. “At a great loss, we will try to do everything we can for him. To this day he has been a very important player, a strong player for us,” he said.

Mancini praised his team for another good game. “I don’t think we suffered much every minute of the game. To beat a team like Belgium you have to do well with everyone and that’s what happened today,” he said.

“We scored two goals and we could have won more. I think the victory is totally worth it. Spain is following but going forward it will be very difficult. Tonight, we just want to think about how we work and our success,” he added.
