Erdogan says he hopes to discuss the F-35 dispute with Biden | Story

The Turkish president says he wants to discuss the matter with the US leader at the end of a summit in Glasgow.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he expects to meet with US President Joe Biden next week and remove Turkey from the US-led F-35 program.

“Obviously we will have a conference in Glasgow instead of Rome. Our most important issue will be the F-35,” Erdogan told reporters on his arrival in Azerbaijan on Wednesday.

The United States has withdrawn its NATO counterpart from Turkey in an international program that manufactures F-35 aircraft in 2019 as a result of Ankara’s plan to purchase high-quality Russian S-400 air defense equipment. Washington says Russia’s plan is undermining the safety of F-35s.

Erdogan said his government wanted to repay $ 1.4bn before the country was expelled from the F-35 program, and the US decided to sell F-16 weapons to Turkey to recover the money.

Erdogan and Biden will both attend the COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow, Scotland, from October 31 to November 12.

Erdogan also said he wanted to meet Biden at the G-20 summit in Rome. “We have a $ 1.4bn payout related to the F-35s. We need to discuss how the repayment plan will work.”

Wear conflicts

Erdogan’s comments came days after the Turkish president dropped the threat of deporting US and nine other Western diplomats for helping Osman Kavala, a prisoner of war and a charity, resolve the crisis.

The delegation last week demanded his release Kavala, who has been in a Turkish prison for four years awaiting trial on charges considered trivial.

The issue was resolved when the ambassadors declared their compliance with Article 41 of the Vienna Convention, which states that the ambassadors’ duties are to respect the laws of the land and to remain neutral.

Erdogan denied that he was behind the crisis. “I am in danger. There is no going back in my book, “he said.
